The New Virtual Reality Experience at the Buried Village of Te Wairoa

Just a 10 minute drive from Tarawera the Buried Village of Te Wairoa offers a poignant glimpse into the events surrounding the catastrophic 1886 eruption of Mt. Tarawera. This tragic event led to the burial of the village under layers of volcanic ash and mud, forever altering the lives of its inhabitants. Today, the site stands as New Zealand's most visited archaeological attraction, dedicated to preserving and narrating the stories of that fateful night.

A Journey Through Time with Virtual Reality

In a groundbreaking initiative to bring history to life, the Buried Village has introduced an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) experience. This cutting-edge addition allows visitors to step back in time and witness the village as it stood before the eruption. Through the VR headset, you'll explore meticulously recreated scenes of Te Wairoa, gaining a deeper understanding of the daily lives of its residents and the magnitude of the disaster that befell them.

Beyond Virtual Reality: Explore the Excavated Sites and Museum

While the VR experience offers a digital reconstruction, the physical remnants of Te Wairoa provide tangible connections to the past. Strolling through the excavated sites, visitors can observe the preserved structures and artifacts unearthed over decades of careful excavation. The on-site Museum of Te Wairoa houses a collection of both European and Māori objects recovered from the ruins, along with a vast array of photographs, including captivating images of the famed Pink and White Terraces.
